Selamawit was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She has Exhibited at The Addis Ababa Museum and The National Theater of Ethiopia.

Selamwit states that " Despite their importance to life, their abundance, and their presence over a large proportion of the year, leaves are perhaps the least appreciated part of a tree; Compared to the life span of a given tree; its leaves lived a fraction of a moment but if they will not be able to fulfil there purpose what will the destiny of that tree be? so are the common people, particularly women, and children. What will happen if that fraction of the moment is crushed??? Through my art, I wish to convey a sense of worthiness, beauty, truth, support, Risk, survival, challenge, and legacy"
